Artwork Notes:
Art and design by Izzy Man. This cover was inspired by the game the sample is taken from, “Altered Beast”, the Sega Genesis game that started the 16 bit revolution. It does what NINTENDON’T. I took the most iconic images from the game and re-painted in Photoshop to give it a colorful and vibrant in-your-face attitude that captures the song, the game, and the whole attitude of the 90s. The cover is also based on the old classic covers for Sega Genesis cartridges with white graph on black background accents which brings nostalgic and retro flavors. The background flames and waves are what happens right before the transformation, and the MC beast in the front was taken from the original front cover from “Altered Beast.” The colors and symbols were all brought together to bring the visual B.E.A.S.T. as well as tie the crazy clashing colors into a cohesive piece, as a symphony should be.
Song Notes:
I had wanted to sample something from this game ever since I started producing beats in 2008. “Altered Beast” was the first video game I remember playing, and in fact my cousin Josh and I took almost 20 years to beat it; on his 18 year old Sega Genesis and original cartridge nonetheless; the game was PURE DIFFICULT. Just in case you don’t know what the game is about, in a nutshell you’re resurrected by Zeus to save his daughter Athena, and throughout the game you kick blue three-headed wolves in the face, which then unleash power orbs that you consume while stating “POWER UP” and after three orbs, you transform into a beast. With this fueling the idea for a song, I wanted to evoke a beat that awoke the “beast” in all of us. The first iteration was created on a 6-hour bus trip from Queens to Oneonta, on my way to school from Thanksgiving break. I showed the beat to Jimmy, where we wrote a whole 2 sixteen’s to the song. We decided this beat was too good to keep between the two of us, and extended it to the rest of the Cosmonauts (rap group extraordinaire including myself, Jimmytheloch, Bamboo MC, B Nice, and Zev) and as soon as I figured the craziness about to unfold, I revamped the beat, further unlocking the beast within. We decided to name it “Beat Elegance: A Sound Trigger”, so to unleash the beast, we must hear the “B.E.A.S.T.” Jimmy and I had our verses done; Zev followed, then Bam and B-Nice. The challenge was to further shift the song to fit each voice, flow, and style, further unlocking the potential to this track. It took a whole half a year to “conduct” this orchestra of sound and voice to make this piece. One of the reasons why the soundtrack to this game was so iconic to me was the fact that it was the first time a video game spoke to me. Since the limitations of technology were in place, “Rise from your grave” sounded like “WISE FWOM YO GWABE.” Either way, we wanted to create a song that would make your inner BEAST rise from your grave, if need be.
